Octogenarians Describe Grasshopper Days and Coming of Railroad
August Rahn, the father-in-law of Rev. H. H. Schwenk of Grant Township, observed his 89th birthday yesterday, January 27, having been born in 1836 in Prussia. He and his wife came to America in 1866, soon after their marriage. His wife died fifteen years ago and Mr. Rahn is making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Schwenk. Three of the five children born to him and his wife are surviving, also 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Although his eyesight and hearing show the effects of age, his general health is good and during the summer, he delights to work out of doors. Chopping wood is his favorite form of occupation and in a year’s time, he cuts up a large amount. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of fourteen years and is still a consistent worshiper, being found in his place regularly every Sunday.
