(August 29, 1843 - January 2, 1926)

Ida County Pioneer, Ida Grove, Iowa, Wed., Jan 21, 1925, p.1
Here’s First List of Citizens Who Are Over Eighty

Dr. J. H. Besore of Ida Grove has been a resident of this city since 1885, and is at his office every day, in spite of the fact that he will be 82 years old, the twenty-ninth day of the coming August. He was born in Fulton County, Pa., and became of age while serving in the Twelfth Maryland Infantry. He was in the Civil War service five months and one of his most vivid impressions was the breakfast that he and his comrades ate near Harper’s Ferry, Va., one morning that had been cooked by Mosby’s raiders. The Confederates had sifted through the Union lines and wrecked an express train bearing supplies to the Union Army. The federal troops quickly arrived on the scene and found the prepared eatables that the raiders had not been able to take in their hasty retreat. Dr. Besore became a member of the Masonic fraternity at Bangor, Mich., March 30, 1871 and for the past twenty years he has been high priest of Syria Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Ida Grove.
