John William Cope (1893-1976)

John William Cope was born in Battle Creek, Maple Township, Ida County, Iowa on Sep 8, 1893, the son of Ira Warren Cope and Carolina Hansen. He was the 4th of 9 children born to Ira and Carolina Cope. Ira and Carolina were divorced between 1906-1910.
John grew up in Ida County and served his country in WWI from July 14, 1917 to Jan 18, 1919. His draft registration stated that he was tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. John married Bessie B. Mills on July 5, 1920 in Sac County, Iowa. They had four children: John William Cope (1921-1976, Harold E. Cope (1923-2001), Howard L. Cope (1924-1982), and Donald W. Cope (1928-1930). John worked as a laborer in a lumber yard in Ida Grove. John and Bessie were divorced and John marriage Doris E.P. Miller on Apr 25, 1936. They had a daughter, Eloise P. Cope (1937-2003) and James D. Cope (1948-1972). They continued to live in Ida County. John died Sep 6, 1976 and was buried in Ida Grove Cemetery.
