Word was received here Monday that, Mr Harry Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Cook had been killed in Des Moines by a colored laborer for the Turner Improvement company: for whom Harry was a time keeper. We have been unable to get the full particulars and there upon make use of an item from the Capital.
Harry Thomas, the negro who fatally stabbed H. L. Cook, the time keeper for Turner Improvement, in a scuffle at East Fifth and the the Rock Island track Saturday afternoon almost escaped fom the city Jall today. Thomas picked the lock with a beer cleck. He was in the corridor and was preparing to make a clean getaway when Jailer Tom Cross appeared him on the scene. He grasped the negro in his arms and attempted to throw him back into the cell.
After a desperate scuffle the negro was locked up once more. Cook's wound proved more serious than was feared at first and his death occurred at Mercy Hospital Saruday night. Thomas will be held for murder. The body of Cook was taken to is home at Rutlnd, Iowa, for the burial at 3 o'clock this morning. The first name of the deceased is Harry, and he is not Herman Cook of Eighth street, as was rumored Saturday.
Harry L. Cook was raised about six mles south of here and was considred as a promising a young man as there was in his home neigborhood and his sudden death has caused many old-time acquaintance to recall his many true and manly qualities. For the bereaved family the community extends all they can give and all they could possibly recive - the condolences and sympathy of all, in this their hour of sorrow.
