NOTE: John's headstone says John Frey, but the Civil War Monument and the obituary have the name as Frie.

JOHN FRIE.
Was born September 12th, 1840, in Switzerland and died at his home in Dakota City, Iowa, June l3th, 1908.

He came to America in 1863 and settled In Chicago, Illinois. He enlisted in the union army and was for some time a soldier in the civil war [Co. D, 30th Illinois Infantry according to the Civil War Monument]. After the war he returned to Chicago where he was married to Louisa Halter. Three children were born to them and she died in 1878. That same year he came to Iowa and settled in Grundy County. Here was married to his present wife in 1884. In 1885 they came to Humboldt County and settled on a farm in south Avery township. In 1889 they moved to Dakota City where he has lived to the time of his death and where his lonely widow now survives him. He
leaves his wife, two sons, one daughter, a sister and one brother to mourn his loss. Mr. Frie was a member of the German Evangelical church of Dakota City and since its abandonment has given of his money and influence to the union church meetings and was a good helper of the Willing Workers Society which will certainly miss him. He was buried from the brick church in Dakota City, Rev. H. D. Herr of the Congregational church with his own choir, in charge of the services. The burial took place in Union Cemetery to which the funeral procession was escorted by a detail from Albert Rowley Post G. A,R. No.193 and the ritual service of the order, was used at the grave, assisted by the minister.
