Born 1879 in Lime Springs? I wonder if the father is George M. Van Leuven, Jr., who was a U.S. Claim Attorney in that town at about that time.
I'm currently going through my great-great-grandfather's Civil War pension file, and there's an interesting case of pension fraud, or at least the accusation of it by a special examiner. My ancestor, James Thornton, was a client of Van Leuven's, and he and a bunch of other fellows submitted what were said to be knowingly false affidavits under the direction of Van Leuven.
Legal action is threatened, but in my ancestor's case was never taken, but the special examiner in his letter seems to think Van Leuven was doing a LOT of this kind of fraud. I wonder if he was ever prosecuted?
In the file are papers and stuff signed by Van Leuven, his letterhead and stuff.
