Jason Smith, age 43, passed away on May 29, 2026, at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.

Jason John Smith was born on October 13, 1982, to Rick Smith and Janet (Breitsprecher) Smith in Cresco, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco. He graduated from Crestwood High School with the Class of 2001. During high school he began working at Movies America. He loved his job and continued working there following graduation. He enjoyed the people who came into the store, getting to know the “regulars” so well that he could easily help them pick out the perfect movie on their next visit.

Jason had the biggest heart and cared deeply about his family. He always wanted everyone else to be happy, even if he wasn’t. His love held true not only for his family, but for his very special dogs, Tony and Titan. These two dogs brought so much joy to his life.

Those left to cherish his memory include is father Rick Smith, mother Janet Smith (Rod Ollendieck), sister Jessica Smith (Tim Martin), brother Christopher Smith, nephew Jamal Aden, grandmothers Dorothy Smith and Sara Breitsprecher, uncle Fred Smith (Denise Macal), aunts: Deb Preist, Karen (Craig) Wedderspoon, Cindy (Ken) Carruth, Susan Kratz and Vicki (Ehab) Michael along with many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandpa Don Breitsprecher, uncles Robert and Bill Smith, great-grandparents and his two special companions Tony and Titan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the family in honor of Jason. For those wishing to send memorials please mail to Schmelzer Funeral Home, PO Box 408, Cresco, IA 52136.

A private family service will be held. Schmelzer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
