Patrick Arnold Taylor, age 87, passed away unexpectedly on May 6, 2026, at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.
Patrick was born September 9, 1938, in rural Bonair, Iowa, the son of Albert C Taylor and Evaline Schmauss Taylor. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1956, competing in football and wrestling. Upon graduating, Pat was a carpenter for several years.
On October 9, 1960, he married Constance Helming, a union which would last for 64 years. Shortly after marrying, he attended Waterloo Barber College and upon graduating, barbered in Osage for a year, before returning to Cresco where he opened up Taylor’s Barber Shop in 1961 on 1st Avenue. Pat continued to cut hair until he sold the shop in 1997.
Retirement did not last long, as he reopened Taylor’s Barber Shop on 2nd Avenue where he received the social environment, he so enjoyed participating in. Finally, in 2015 at the age of 75, he hung up his clippers for good.
People who knew Pat were familiar with his love for fishing, his enthusiasm for card playing, his enjoyment of riding motorcycles and scooters, and his daily habit of playing a game or twelve of solitaire on the computer. If you drove by Pat’s house in the summertime, there was a good chance you would catch him cutting a blade or two of grass that were just a bit too tall.
Pat is survived by his daughter Lori (Bill) Puffett of Mitchellville, IA, son Eric (Sara) of Overland Park, KS, grandson David (Ashley) Puffett of Urbandale, IA, grandson Derek Puffett of Denver, Co, granddaughter Jessica Taylor of La Crosse, WI, great granddaughter Emersyn Puffett, brother Tom (Doris) Taylor of Versailles, KY, sister Elenor Wubben of Clear Lake, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
Patrick was preceded in death by his wife Constance, mother Evaline and stepdad Ray Fulcher, father Albert Taylor, a brother Rod Taylor and wife Elinor, sister Betty Shea and husband Ken, infant sister Shirley, and brother in-law Jerry Wubben.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to a charity of your choice within the Cresco area.
A visitation for Patrick A Taylor will be held on June 19, 2026, from 2-4 pm at Schmelzer Funeral Home in Cresco.
