David R. Kostohryz, age 79, of Cresco, Iowa, died on Monday, March 30, 2026 at WinnMed in Decorah, IA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2026, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, with Fr. Chris Podhajsky presiding. David will be laid to rest at Holy Trinity Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Monday at the church. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home Protivin is assisting the family.

David Ray Kostohryz was born on March 4, 1947, in Cresco, IA, son of Raymond J. and Evelyn D. (Mracek) Kostohryz. Dave attended kindergarten at a rural country school then transferred to Holy Trinity until the 8th grade, and graduated from Crestwood High School. On August 30th 1986, Dave married Carol (Meier) Vrba at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. At that time, he stepped into the role of step-father to Carol’s 5 children.

Dave enjoyed farming, the calm presence of his horses, and being a steward to the land. He was an excellent grandpa that liked riding shotgun in the Mule with his grandchildren driving around the farm. Dave loved his dogs; it was not uncommon to see him going for a drive in his pickup with his dog’s wearing sunglasses. He had multiple collections including toy trains, miniature tractors and coins. Dave also enjoyed watching Western movies along with several favorite shows on television.

He is survived by his wife Carol Kostohryz of Cresco; step-children Donald (Tina) Vrba Jr. of Dixon, MO, Debra (Chris) Ruff of Marion, IA, Dean Vrba of Dysart, IA, Deanna (Jason) Dickinson of Cassville, MO, and Dan (Rachel) Vrba of Cresco, IA; grandchildren Meghan (Nick) Goodrich, Jordyn Vrba, Isaac Vrba, Ian Vrba, Bradan Dickinson, Drew Dickinson, Mason Vrba, Lexus Vrba, and Alayna Vrba; great grandchildren Blaire and Jackson Goodrich; sisters Janet (Jim) Shelton of Cresco, and Karen (Gene) Koschmeder of Cresco; and several nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Evelyn, and his niece Amy Koschmeder.
