Deaths at Protivin.
Father Time has called another of his faithful sons, and one of our prominent and pioneer citizens, when on Saturday morning, January 31, John Bouska passed away. The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bouska, who settled in this country in the year 1853. He was born in July, 1847, in Bohemia. Like most of the lads of that early time he was reared and educated in the district schools, although his opportunities in that direction were limited and his lessons were more of practical experience than of books. In 1874 he wedded Anna Fencl and they moved to Howard county, settling on land which his father has previously purchased, adjoining the townsite of Protivin, and for forty years he was actively engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was very successful in this undertaking and by hard toil acquired landed possesions{sic} embracing thirteen hundred acres in Howard and Winneshiek counties. In late years he divided this property among his children, save that he retained a twenty acre tract of land as his home. He was one of the founder of the Bohemian Savings bank and was the vice president of that institution until his death. He also was the president of the Protivin Telephone Co. He held many other public offices and always was a painstaking and diligent officer. His wife died a little more than a year ago, and since that time his youngest daughter, Mrs. Albina Svoboda, and her husband moved to his home and kept house for him. He was the father of thirteen children, of whom nine are yet living—Frank W. of Chicago, Mary, the wife of Anton Blazek near Lawler, Caroline the wife of Frank Klimesh, in Utica Twp., Frances, wife of Lewis Ptacek at Cresco, John A. in Winneshiek Co., Joseph D. at Protivin, Charles B. on the old homestead, Louisa, wife of A. Busta in Sumner twp. and Albina wife of John Svoboda.
He always was a broadminded citizen and deserves credit for what he has accomplished in this community.
The funeral was held Monday Feb. 2 at the Holy Trinity Church and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining. May he rest in peace for his mission was faithfully done. The family has the sincere sympathy of the entire community.
