JoAnn Clara Dostal, age 90, of Algonquin, IL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
Memorial Mass for JoAnn will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, May 9, 2025, at Holy Trinity Parish in Protivin, IA, with Fr. Nick Radloff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will take place in the Holy Trinity Cemetery.
JoAnn was born June 2, 1934 on the Voyek Family Farm, the daughter of Frank E. and Clara Koudelka Voyek. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, attended the Parochial school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in 1951. During her high school years she served as librarian, was a member of the Sodality of Mary, sang in the school choir, wrote for the school paper, “The Rudograph” and was a cheerleader for the basketball teams.
On September 24, 1951, JoAnn married Gerald Dostal at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. To this union three daughters were born: Christel Renae Dostal, Cheryl Diane Hodgerson, Dorene Anne (Daniel) Johnson. She was blessed with two granddaughters, Heather (Kyle) Kirchhoff and Holly (Matt) Sleger and three great grandchildren, Brynlee Ann and Caleb Paul Sleger and MacKenzie Ann Kirchhoff. Her husband and family always came first in her life. Her granddaughters and great grandchildren were her special gifts. She always cherished them. JoAnn was an active member of the community, serving on many committees. She was a member and served as officer of the Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary on local, county and district levels, and Howard County Hospital Auxiliary where she also was a hospital volunteer.
She served as chairman of the Holy Trinity Parish Council during the planning of the first Czech Days. She was a Eucharistic Minister in Holy Trinity Church. She was a member of the Turkey Valley Band Boosters. She was a charter member of the Czech Heritage Partnership and instrumental in establishing the Family History and Documents Center in Protivin.
JoAnn was employed by the Bohemian Savings Bank in Protivin from 1970 to 1986 and served as a Board member from 1985 to 1986. She was employed by Community First Bank in Decorah, Iowa from 1998 to 2003.
Traveling was an enjoyable part of her life. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States. She also visited eighteen countries, with the Czech Republic being a frequent and favorite destination. JoAnn was passionate about genealogy and enjoyed many hobbies including needlework, quilting, reading, and flower gardening.
After Gerald’s passing, she moved to a wonderful independent living community in Algonquin, IL to be close to family. She made many dear friends among the residents and staff. She was very active in the community, participated in a variety of activities, and went on many outings.
She is survived by her three daughters, two granddaughters, three great grandchildren, sister Susan Belschner, brother-in-law Ronald (Agnes) Dostal, and six nieces and six nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Clara Voyek; brother and sister-in-law Larry and Jane Voyek; brother–in-law Mark (Susan) Belschner; brother and sister-in-law William G. and Barbara Dostal; nephew, Tom Voyek; grandparents John and Emilie Voyek and Frank and Lydia Koudelka.
