Anne Lukes, age 103, of Protivin, Iowa, died on March 12, 2025, at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with Deacon Jim Zajicek officiating. Family will begin greeting friends and relatives at 9:30 until the time of service on Friday. Anne will be laid to rest next to her husband, Art, in the church cemetery.
Anna Belle Bouska was born on December 10, 1921, to Professor Frank W. Bouska of Protivin and Sarah Bell of Augusta, Georgia. Anne attended Rudolphinum School in Protivin and St. Benedict’s Girls College in St. Joseph, Minnesota, where she majored in music, piano and cello. On March 3, 1944, Anne married Art Lukes, an electrician in Protivin where they made their home. Anne was hired as a part time postal clerk, first filling in during the Post Master’s fishing trips for fifty cents an hour; then as the Post Master in 1971. She was awarded the 40-year Postal Service Award. Anne retired in 1986 and Art died in June of 1987.
Anne loved to travel, play cards, bingo nights with the girls, and music. She played the piano for residents until her death. If heaven is as wonderful as the Bible says, then Anne is still playing that grand piano with the pedals pumping, her hands flying across the keyboard, playing music from “The Great Composers” mixed with lively Czech Heritage Favorites. If you listen closely, you might hear her playing a familiar tune.
Anne is survived by her children John F Lukes (Joanie), Connie Lukes, Mary Shileny (Dennis), Paul A Lukes (Mary); nine grandchildren Scott Lukes (Kim), Jeff Lukes (Denise), Lauren Helm, Eric Lukes (Heather), Nicole Lopez (Gus), Deontay Lukes-Williams, Lacy Meyer (Scott), Chelsea Lukes, Deanna Lukes; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Art Lukes, daughter Jean Ann Lukes who died too young, son Mark J Lukes (Linda), daughter-in-law Maria Lukes, grandson Carlos Lukes-Houston, and her parents, Frank and Sarah.
