It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marketta passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024 in the company of her family at the Riceville Care Center, in Riceville, Iowa.
Marketta Louise (Dietz) Souhrada was born August 8, 1934 to William and Vera (Goldsmith) Dietz. Her youth was spent near Chatfield, Minnesota and later in LeRoy, Minnesota where she graduated high school as an honor student. On November 2, 1953 she married the love of her life Darrell David Souhrada Sr. in LeRoy, MN. Marketta and Darrell started their family and their farming life just east of Riceville and eventually moved to the established farm just east of Saratoga. This farm was the foundation for raising her children after the passing of her husband Darrell. Maintaining the farm was a challenge that helped instill a great work ethic in her children. Marketta lived the last 29 years in her home in Riceville.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Shary (and the late Lee) Meyer of New Hartford, IA, Darrell David (Donna) Souhrada Jr. of Lime Springs, IA, Pamela (Allen) Krueger, of Lime Springs, IA, Mike (Joanne) Souhrada, of Ostrander, MN, and John (Samantha) Souhrada of Waverly, IA, 13 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren plus one on the way. She is survived by a brother Carroll Funke, a sister Maxine Leff, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Marketta will be greeted in heaven by her parents William and Vera Dietz, her husband Darrell David Souhrada Sr., son Martin Souhrada, son-in-law Lee Meyer, great-grandson Henry David Souhrada and seven siblings.
A visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 15 at Schmelzer Funeral Home in Riceville. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 16 at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Riceville Community Center.
