OBITUARY
Jonathan Edson Wells, son of Jonathan and Prudence Wells, was born March 20, 1838 in Fletcher, Vermont, where his boyhood days were spent and passed away at his home in Cresco Jan. 29, 1919, at the age of 80 years, 8 months.
His father died when he was but nine years old. A year later his mother was united in marriage with Luther Wells, a brother of her former husband, who with his children came to live in her home and the united families were reared with the affectionate brothers and sisters.
At the age of eighteen he came west to Luana, Iowa, where he made his home with a sister until Sept. 25, 1861, when he was untied in marriage with Mary E. Burgess of that place.
In 1866 he, with his family settled on a farm six miles north of Cresco. Then a man of fine health and physique, with large tender heart and cheerful disposition, endeared him to every one in those tedious pioneer days of hardships, privations and sickness when he was in constant demand to manufacture hope for the heart and help with willing hands. In 1898 he with his wife removed to Cresco where they have since resided. His business relations have brought him in contact with many business men and others of the city, who unite with us in expressing their extreme sorrow at his sudden death, which occurred after but one week’s illness. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his death and cherish his memory, two sons, C. A. and J. W. of Cresco, two grandsons, two sisters, nephews and nieces besides a host of friends as the large attendance at the funeral well demonstrated.
The funeral services were held at the Congregational church Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Bockoven and the Masonic order of which he was a member, and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Oaklawn.
Relatives who attended the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Will Russel of Monona and Mrs. John McConigle, Mrs. Will Splies and mother-in-law of Luana.

Call not back the dear departed
Anchored safe where storms are o’er,
On the borderland we’ve left him,
Soon to meet and part no more.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Mar. 3, 1838(which does not agree with the above). Find a Grave shows his middle name spelled Edison which does not agree with the above.
