David “Dave” G. Farnsworth passed away (after fighting five different types of cancer for many years) on October 16, 2024. He was a resident at Accura Healthcare of Cresco for only five weeks prior to passing.
Dave was born to Gerry R. and Helen E. (Necas) Farnsworth on December 6, 1947 in Cresco, IA. Dave spent his childhood on various farms in the Lime Springs and Riceville area. He attended country school, Saratoga #1, until the seventh grade where he attended Chester School. He went to Cresco High School this freshman year. He then transferred and graduated from Riceville High School. Following graduation he farmed with his Dad and was employed by various local farmers.
Dave was drafted into the United States Army in 1969 and was deployed to Vietnam. He was shot by “friendly fire” during a consultation. He was life flighted to Okinawa where he spent several months recuperating. Dave was the only surviving solider out of his company.
After returning home, he again took up his love for farming. He married his former neighbor’s daughter, Jann Harwood on December 8, 1973. Together they lived on an acreage in the Lime Springs area. He continued farming but eventually gave it up for factory work. He was employed at Cresco Tile Company, Rawhide Trailers, ending his working career at Featherlite Trailers where he retired in 2010. The couple moved to Cresco in 1998.
Dave enjoyed playing cards with whoever wanted to sit down with him. He loved fishing and together they purchased a lake lot in Montezuma, IA, which they enjoyed for 10 years. After retirement, his greatest joy was his two Godchildren, spoiling became the name of his game.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Janet Lea (Harwood) Farnsworth, their dog companion Jewell Rose, two precious Godchildren Cassandra Jewell “CJ” and Olivia Rose Nelson, his spiritually adopted family Becka and Ron Nelson, his Hospice nurse Nikki Shimek, along with many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald Russell and Helen Ellen Farnworth and two brothers Terry Eugene (Kerry) and Donald Allan (Nancy).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Legion in Dave’s memory.
