A Pioneer Gone.
Mrs. Emma Ann Morgan, the second daughter of Franklin and Clarissa Smith, was born July 25, 1840, at Otisco, N. Y, and there she grew to womanhood. On January 1, 1863, at Preble, N. Y., she was united in marriage to Willard Morgan. Three children were born to them, one dying in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Charles Millard, died in March, 1906. One son, Herbert, of Cresco, still survives.
About four years after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan moved to Whitewater, Wisconsin, where they lived for eight or nine years. In the fall of 1874, they moved to Iowa and purchased a farm at the south edge of Cresco where they lived for nineteen years. In 1893, they secured property and located in east Cresco where they resided until Mr. Morgan’s death in April, 1909. Mrs. Morgan continued her home there for two or three years, but failing health compelled her to discontinue the home and reside with her son.
In early life, at about the age of thirteen, she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Hers has been a life of true devotion to the church and the cause of Christ. She had great faith in God and with it a strong desire to serve Him through the various organizations of church activity. The Aid Society, temperance and missionary work received her most ardent help and she continued her membership in some of these organizations until God called her home.
In failing health since 1906, an invalid since 1912 when she received an injury from which she never recovered, and entirely helpless for the past three years, she very peacefully departed this life on Tuesday afternoon, August 20, 1918, age 78 years and 26 days. She had been a resident of Cresco for 44 years.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. O. D. Millett, of Cresco, one son, Herbert, of Cresco, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, besides other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held at the home of her son, Herbert Morgan, on West Second Street, Thursday morning at 10:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. E. G. Copeland and interment was made at Oak Lawn.
