H. H. Wells was born in Saratoga county, New York, Sept. 16, 1835, moving to Fon du Lac, Wis., with his parents in 1846. After living eight years in Fon du Lac and Marquette countries, Wis., he came to Howard county in Sept. 1854. He and Joseph Knowlton drove through from Fon du Lac, Wis., bringing some horses and cattle with them. Reaching here late in the fall, they put up enough hay to keep their stock through the winter and spent the winter of 1854-55 in a cabin which they built on the bank of the Iowa river just back of the present location of the H. E. Ober residence. The following year his father, John F. Wells and family came and pre-empted on the land now known as the Harvey Wells farm one mile east of the Old Town of Lime Springs. His father being too old to enlist in the regular service in the civil war, he enlisted in the Iowa Gray Bears and died in the service at Rock Island, Ill., in 1864. He was married Dec. 29th 1856 to Laura A. Doolittle at Marquette, Wis., and he with his wife, Laura, returned to Lime Springs soon after their marriage, making the journey during the winter months with one horse hitched to a hand made vehicle called a jumper. Mr. and Mrs. Wells lived very happily together for over 60 years, she having died July 15, 1917. They occupied the old homestead together until 1898 when they moved to Lime Springs. Mr. Wells joined the M. E. church in 1873 when the church was located at Old Town and was a faithful member until his death July 28th, 1918. He leaves to mourn his death, one brother, Albina Wells and family, of Lime Springs, four neices{sic} of Fon du Lac, Wis., and Peter Jay Anderson, an adopted son, who now lives at Winnett, Montana.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. It also shows his wife’s name as Lovira.
