OBITUARY.
KELLOGG.
The real wealth of any city is to be measured by the character of its leading citizens. In the passing of Dr. George H. Kellogg, Monday morning, June 24, 1918, Cresco loses one of her oldest and most valued citizens. For a period of forty-four years, Dr. Kellogg has identified himself with the business and commercial welfare of the city. For a period of five years, 1881 to 1886, he was major of the city and has always taken an interest in its progress.
Dr. Kellogg was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, December 1, 1852. When a mere lad, his parents moved to a farm near Decorah, Ia., where he grew to young manhood. In his early twenties, he came to Cresco and established himself in the practice of dentistry. Some years later he went into the organ and piano business and was known all over northeastern Iowa for honesty and integrity. Some time after the death of his first wife, he was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Brooks of Ossian, Ia., in 1882. To this union was born a son, William D. now successor to his father in business, and one daughter, now Mrs. Georgia Edwards of St. Paul. There is also an adopted daughter, Miss Leota Still in the home, who with the wife, the son and other near relatives were with him when the end came.
For the past forty-five years, he has lived in Cresco. He has witnessed its development and been closely identified with its various phases of progress. He was a man of industry, frugality and straight forwardness; a man who was always ready to do his part in the things which would contribute to the welfare of the town and community. Although in failing health for the past three years, he was about the house most of the time until May 24 last. Since that time he failed rapidly until the end came. Very quietly and peacefully his spirit passed out early Monday morning June 24th, age 65 years, 6 months and 24 days.
The funeral service was held at the Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock conducted by Rev. E. G. Copeland. Music was furnished by Mrs. Dr. Allen and Mrs. Dana Mead with Mrs. W. W. Nichols accompanist. Interment was made at New Oregon cemetery.
Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards of St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. L. Smith and daughter Harriet of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Beckett of Clayton, Mrs. Alice Kincanon of Wauzeka, Wis., and her daughter Mrs. Mattie Gink of LaCrosse, Wis.
