OBITUARY.
Mary Anna Edmister passed peacefully away early Monday morning, after a brief illness of two weeks.
Matie, as she was generally called, was the daughter of David S. and Olive C. Edmister, pioneer residents of Howard county. She was born at the farm home near Cresco on Sept. 2nd, 1876. There she grew to womanhood, and in March 1905 came to Cresco with the family to live.
Of an industrious temperament, she sought employment and obtained a position in the G. Meverden furniture store as bookkeeper and clerk. She was there five and one-half years, resigning her position only a short time before going into business for herself. In Jan. 1912 she and her sister, Emma Edmister, purchased the stock of the Wonder store from L. E. Baker and have continued the business under the firm name of Edmister & Edmister.
Though never of robust health, she was faithful to every detail of an ever increasing business, often overtaxing her strength in her desire to better serve the customers of this popular store.
In August 1905 she united with the Congregational Church of Cresco, and was a faithful attendant at the services of the church. She was secretary of the Bible class, and though she was then ailing attended the Bible class two weeks ago last Sunday and performed her duties as secretary.
She was a member of the Cresco Rebekah Lodge; and had just been elected to membership in the Cresco Chapter of the Eastern Star, but her last sickness prevented the fulfillment of an ardent wish to be a member of that fraternal order.
A frail body did not discourage her in her endeavor to do the useful things of life. There is left in the family circle to mourn her loss, her mother, Mrs. Olive Edmister, her sister, Emma and her brother, Ira G. Edmister. Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. A. Bockoven, with interment beside her father in Oak Lawn.
