SHIELDS

Miss Julia Shields died at Mercy hospital, Cresco, Iowa, Jan. 25, 1917, after an illness extending over ten days. Death was due to a general breakdown combined with an advanced age.

The deceased was born in 1839 in Edenburg, Kings Co., Ireland, leaving and immigrating to America in her early girlhood she made her home in Rockford, Ill., afterward coming west to Howard County, Ia., to the home of a brother residing on a farm near Howard center where for several years she made her home.

Later she moved to Cresco to spend the remaining years of her life and finally as the infirmities of age become more burdensome and she was less able to help herself she went to make her home at Mercy hospital in the autumn of 1912 at which place she received every consideration that kind hands could render but all that good nurses and doctors could do could not stay the hand of death and she failed gradually till the end come{sic}. Her life was spent in preparation to meet her God and through prayers and self sacrifices led a life ever mindful of Him with whom she hoped to dwell in a life everlasting.

All that knew her can truthfully say that a good and true Christian woman has passed to her final reward.

Besides nieces and nephews the deceased leaves one brother Lawrence, of Chicago, Ill., to mourn her death.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fr. Murtagh from the Church of the Assumption, Jan. 27th of which parish she had long been a member. Interment was at St. Joseph’s cemetery.
