Dorothy Pearl Vrba, age 91, a long-time resident of the Protivin area, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Accura Healthcare of Cresco, Iowa.
Born on December 9, 1932, in Spillville, Iowa, to Arthur and Mayme “Mary” (Vachta) Fisher, Dorothy graduated from Calmar High School in 1950. She was employed by Haug Stores when she met Alton D. Vrba. They were united in marriage in 1952, moved to his family farm, then welcomed a son and two daughters. Dorothy became an active, engaged farmer for most of her life.

Dorothy was a strong, independent and resilient woman. She loved all aspects of farming, being outdoors and caring for animals. Despite facing much adversity, she persevered. She was proud of her Czech Heritage. She enjoyed loud polka music, dances and all kolaches. Up until the end, Dorothy often spoke Czech at Accura, even teaching staff a few swear words. Dorothy had a close relationship with her 3 children through their entire lives, often talking to Gary 2 times a day about the farm markets and the weather. She thoroughly enjoyed visits with her 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

In her free time, she was an avid reader and she enjoyed game shows. Dorothy followed all ISU sports, especially football and basketball. Her competitive spirit never waivered, as she still enjoyed bingo and cards at Accura.

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Shari Phillips (Vincent) and Terri Vrba Bylander (Jon), daughter-in-law Brenda Vrba, three grandchildren Christopher Vrba, Karie Vokes, Jessie Vrba, four great-grandchildren Fred, Jonathan, Lucy, Caroline, brother Jim Fisher (Joan), sisters Delores Pecinovsky and Peggy Reicks.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Alton Vrba, longtime companion Edwin Kostohryz, son Gary Vrba, and sisters Mildred Pecinovsky and Elaine Rommes, brothers-in-law Joe Pecinovsky, Ralph Pecinovsky, Myles Rommes, and Gene Reicks.

Memorial Mass for Dorothy will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 1, 2024, at Holy Trinity Parish in Protivin, IA, with Fr. Nick Radloff officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service from 10-11 a.m. at the church, with Recitation of the Rosary at 9:45 a.m. Burial will take place in the Holy Trinity Cemetery.
