Joanne Martinek, age 94, formerly of Decorah, died on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at the Waters on Mayowood, in Rochester, MN.
A Scripture Service for Joanne will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at the Holy Trinity Parish at 1:30 pm in Protivin, IA, with Deacon Jim Zajicek officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the start of the service at the church. Burial will be held at the church cemetery.
Joanne Caroline Martinek, daughter of William and Luella (Feltis) Mailey, was born on December 22, 1928, in Decorah, IA. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1947 with a Teaching Certificate. She was a teacher in rural schools in the Decorah area for 4 years. She was married to Arthur Louis Martinek at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, IA on November 25, 1950. They made their home in the Cresco area where she taught for 2 more years and then farmed until 1982. Joanne enjoyed being a caregiver and very much enjoyed taking care of her cousin, Bernice Feltis, and 2 special friends Mabel Hovden and Marian Elwood. She remarked that her life was blessed from knowing Bernice, Mabel, Marian, and Marian’s family and did not want people to feel sad when she passed. She retired at 75 and went to live back on the homestead.
Joanne moved to Rochester, MN December 2014 to live with her daughter and son-in-law until August 2017, at which time she moved into the Waters on Mayowood. She was able to live independently and met new friends. She enjoyed walking, chair yoga, bargain shopping, bingo, Bible study, history club and reading mystery books there. May 2021, she moved to the memory care floor and was diagnosed with uterine cancer shortly after. Faith was an important part of Joanne’s life and we are comforted to know she is with her LORD and SAVIOR forevermore.
She is survived by 2 sons Wyman (Tami) of Madrid, IA and David (Rose) of Cresco, IA; 1 daughter Janet (Dave) Staloch of Rochester, MN; 2 grandchildren Melissa Martinek of Bellbrook, OH and Mitchell Martinek of Louisville, CO.
She is also survived by her special cousin, Karen Kumm of Cannon Falls, MN, whose grandparents, William and “Ella” (Sarah Ellen Feltis) Casey raised Joanne from age of 3 years; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Luella Mailey; her aunt and uncle William and Ella Casey; husband, Arthur; 2 brothers Roger and Gerald.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for mother's favorite charities.
