Charles "Chuck" Saltou, age 79, of Lime Springs, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at Mayo Clinic St. Mary's Campus, in Rochester, MN.

Chuck was born on March 15th, 1943 in the family farmhouse in Grundy Center, IA to Ray and Evelyn Saltou and was the third youngest of eight children. He married Connie (McCool) Saltou on October 31st, 1971. Together they had two children and 8 grandchildren. Chuck served in the Military as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic for Iowas’ National Guard from 1964-1970. He worked at Donaldsons for 32 years and retired in 2012. Chuck was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many hunting and salmon fishing trips with his brothers and friends. He also loved spending time fishing below the dam in Lime Springs. He was an accomplished horse trainer and loved to ride. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and often asked how they were doing. More recently, he took up target practice with his eldest grandson, Zach. Chuck taught himself how to play the harmonica while on his long drives home from work. He could also play the mandolin. He was a true arborist and transformed his acreage into what it is today, one tree at a time. He lived for adventure and was never short on stories. In the evenings he could be found watching Ancient Aliens on the History Channel and spewing his Alien “facts” to any who would listen. After the passing of his wife, Connie, their three dogs Tucker, Sully, and Darcy gave him great comfort. Chuck is loved and remembered for his quick wit, charm, and effortless conversation skills.

A memory from Chuck’s son, Shawn;

“Some may not know that Chuck was my stepdad since the age of two. I referred to the other dad as my ‘real’ dad. One Christmas, the other Dad bought me my first bike and while trying to learn how to ride on the farm, I was too short and when I would fall I kept landing on ‘that’ bar which hurt. I ended up making Dad cut the bar off and lower it. He got out his welder and made it happen! Then one day my aunt was over and stated, "that’s a girl's bike!" So I made Dad cut the bar off, raise it back up, and re-weld it. I soon realized who my ‘REAL’ dad was. Way too later in life, I changed my name, my wife, Cathy’s, name, and at that time our son, Travis’, name to honor my ‘real’ dad.”

A memory from Chuck’s daughter, Melissa;

“Mom once told me that I need to find a man like my dad and as I think back I wish I said, “Mom, they don’t make them like Dad anymore.” Growing up, I would often have our horses saddled and ready for a night ride with Dad when he got home from work. We would spend those nights laying on the ground and staring at the stars. Dad even gifted me my first truck, although it wasn’t quite his idea to begin with. My kind heart comes from him and his love.”

He is survived by his children Shawn (Cathy) Saltou of Cresco, IA., Melissa Hill of Lime Springs IA., and seven grandchildren: Zachary, Travis, Jay, Nicole, Jolene, Jared, and Becky. Siblings Betty (Mern) Swancutt, of Chester, IA, Linda Brown of Riceville, IA, Barb (Jim) Musch of Dunkerton, IA, Jimmy (Dorothy) Saltou of Waukon, IA, Jr (Pat) Saltou of Riceville, IA, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife Connie (McCool) Saltou, his parents Ray and Evelyn, his grandchild Michael, his brother Daryl Saltou and his sister LaRae Kleckner.
