Neldon A. Swancutt, age 81, of Elma, IA passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022 at his home with his family by his side.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 12, 2022 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma with Pastor Bruce Miller officiating. Military rites will be provided by Elma American Legion Post #597. Burial will take place at Howard Cemetery in Elma.

There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday, August 12, 2022. Online condolences may be left at www.conway-markhamfh.com. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Neldon Asher was born October 20, 1940, the son of Elby and Mary (Greeley) Swancutt in Riceville, IA. He attended and graduated from Riceville High School. After completing his education, Neldon worked as a farm hand. On Valentine’s Day in 1961, Neldon mustered up the courage to ask Della Mae Miller on a date. The couple knew immediately that they were a match made in Heaven. On July 29, 1961, Neldon and Della were united in marriage at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma, IA. The couple made their home in the Riceville area until 1962 when Neldon enlisted in the United States Air Force. The couple moved from rural Iowa to Davis Monthon Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ. In 1965, the couple welcomed their son, Shawn a few short months prior to Neldon’s deployment to Vietnam where he served his country as an aircraft mechanic. Upon his return home in July of 1966, Neldon received his honorable discharge. The family returned to Iowa and made their home in Riceville. There he worked at the Mason City Airport and Clear Lake Bakery until 1968 when they returned to Tucson. Neldon worked at Louver Factory for 15 years. In 1972, Neldon and Della welcomed their daughter, Shellie. In 1983, Neldon experienced health issues due to Agent Orange exposure during his time in Vietnam. As a family, they returned to Iowa in 1998 where they resided in Elma.

Neldon enjoyed painting, fishing, camping and traveling. His family was his pride and joy. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Those left to honor Neldon’s memory are his wife of 61 years, Della Swancutt of Elma, IA; his children, Shawn (Jennifer) Swancutt of Elma, IA and Shellie (Rocky Mayer) Swancutt of Riceville, IA; his grandchildren, Amanda, Ambrielle, Hanna and Alexa; one great grandchild, Logan; his sister, Shirley Swancutt of Riceville and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Niles, Maynard, Charles, Lois and Donna.
