Oscar Melver, age 81, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, Iowa, where he had been a resident for the last five years.

Oscar was born on March 19, 1940, to Carl and Eva (Henderson) Melver. He grew up in the Bluffton area, alongside his 14 siblings and his childhood best friend Ralph. At the age of 16, Oscar made the move to Bonair, Iowa.

In December 1968, he and Patricia Balk eloped. Together they raised their son, Mark. In the sixty plus years that he lived in Bonair, Oscar moved only once, and that was just across the street.

Growing up in a large family, Oscar knew all about hard work. His working years included time at Peter Produce, taking care of livestock, driving truck, training horses, and later in life hauling Amish. He made many Amish friends, including the Beachy family.

Oscar loved westerns (especially John Wayne movies), spending time working in the garden, taking care of the yard, listening to Polka music, and playing the organ. He was a handyman and enjoyed fixing things around the house.
Oscar loved visiting with people, he could talk to anyone. He had a big heart and dearly loved his family. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Cresco, son Mark (Julie) Melver of Elma, three grandchildren: Rayna (Josh Dunn) Freebury of Alta Vista, Kitana (Tim) Hanson of New Hampton, and Hunter Freebury of Lyle, MN and six great-grandchildren: Lexi, Paisley and Peyton Dunn and Evelyn, Carson and Jamison Hanson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his fourteen siblings.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, February 25, 2022 at Howard Center Cemetery in rural Cresco, Iowa. Those not wishing to attend services at the cemetery are welcome to join the family at the Featherlite Center in Cresco for a luncheon beginning at 11:00 am.
