Lois Helen was born March 4, 1929, the daughter of Albert and Rose (Bartels) Brummond. Lois graduated from Elma High School and went on to work at the Elma Bank. On April 20, 1952, she was united in marriage to Reuben G. Friedrich at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Elma. Following their marriage, the couple farmed north of Elma where they welcomed their children, Carl, Harold, Hope, and Norman. In 1976, Lois and Reuben also welcomed foreign exchange student, Richard Knudsen of Denmark into their home. The entire family continues to treasure this relationship with Richard, who became another member of the family. After 53 years of marriage together, Reuben died on May 13, 2005. Lois later married Albert “Bert” Flugge at St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church on April 5, 2008. He died on June 4, 2009.

Lois' work focused on bookkeeping, rock picking, gardening, and feeding everyone who helped on the farm. Everyone who worked on the farm was treated as part of the family. Lois managed (with help from her children) very large gardens of strawberries, sweet corn, potatoes, apples, and much more. Lois took joy in providing bountiful tables of food for all.

Lois also served in Women of the ELCA, as church secretary, on the Colonial Manor Auxiliary, and as church organist over many years. She enjoyed playing cards, participating in the Coffee and Thimble Club, following college sports, honoring friends’ birthdays and anniversaries, and sharing the love of Christ with everyone. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Maple Leaf Lutheran Church.

Those left to cherish her memory are son Carl Friedrich and Wenjie Xue of Wake Forest, NC; son Norman and Susan Friedrich of West Union, IA; daughter Hope and Russell Grabau of Waterville, MN; daughter-in-law Kathy and Ron Dohlman of Riceville, IA; daughter-in-law: Denise Friedrich of Lincolnshire, IL.; 14 grandchildren: Curtis Friedrich, Leanne Friedrich, Mary Lynn (Dustin) Reese, Sarah Rose (Shane) Stickler, Carolyn Friedrich, Lora Joy Grabau, Zane (Weiming Hu) Grabau, Lydia Grabau, Ezra (Sami) Grabau, Ezekiel Grabau, Tristan Friedrich, Benjamin Friedrich, Ethan Friedrich, and Ellen Friedrich; 2 step-grandchildren, Nathan (Stacy) Shaw and Hannah Zhang; 6 great-grandchildren: Cora, Ivy, Harrison, Alexander, Case, and Zander; sister, Rosanna Petersen; sisters-in-law, Diane Brummond and Arlene Friedrich, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Reuben Friedrich and Albert Flugge; son, Harold Friedrich on January 16, 1989; and brothers, Otto, Erwin, and Norbert Brummond.
