Joel J., son of James C. and Mary Fessenden, was born near Millersburg, Holmes Co., Ohio, April 4th, 1854. He was the ninth of eleven grown-up children, and when he was two years old his family came to LaFayette county. Wis., where they remained about 17 years. As a young man Joel came with his family in 1873 to Howard county, Iowa, and located at Vernon Springs. With the exception of a short period at Canton, Minn., the remainder of Mr. Fessenden’s life was spent in and around Cresco.
On Nov. 29th, 1883, he was married to Anna McLaughlin at Lime Springs, Iowa. To this union was born five children, Neva, who is a teacher at Everett, Wash., Elton of Hansboro, N. D., Zina, superintendent of schools of Howard county, Dale, Mrs. S. J. Plopper of Elma and Ray, assistant in the office of the county superintendent. The three youngest children with the mother were present at the time of the husband and father’s death and at the funeral service. The two older ones were unable to be present. A sister Mrs. Laura Phelps of Sharon, Wis., was also present
In 1893 Mr. Fessenden was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a charter member of the Yoeman lodge of Cresco organized in 1899. In 1902 he became a rural carrier in the government employ and remained such until disease made his continuing impracticable. After 13 months of illness he quietly passed away at 3:30 a. m. the 24th inst.
Funeral services were conducted at the residence at 112 Sixth Ave. East, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. Will Kirwin, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church and burial was made at Oak Lawn cemetery. The postoffice officials attended the services in a body; also the county officials and the Twentieth Century club of which Mrs. Fessenden is a member. The floral tributes were abundant and very beautiful. Friends from out of town in attendance were Samuel Hall, George Hall and son Lawrence and Jos. Williams, all of Lime Springs; Charles Porter a nephew, of Burr Oak, Minn., and Mrs. Eddie Anderson of Decorah.
