James H. Upton was born in Allamakee county, Iowa, March 28, 1855, and was the second child of J. G. and Sarah Upton, who moved to Howard county in April 1855. His entire life was passed on the farm which his father pre-empted and purchased on coming to Howard Co. in the fall of 1854.
He was of a particularly quiet and retiring disposition and was best known only by his most intimate friends to whom be was the soul of hospitality and integrity.
On Oct. 24, 1905, he was united in marriage with Miss Rose Regina Steffens, and to this union was born four children, one daughter and three sons, all of whom with their mother survive him. He died at 12:30 on the morning of March 2, 1915.
The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Gammons officiating, with interment in Oak Lawn cemetery.
