Died—Mrs. Harnack died at her home near Lourdes, Saturday morning and was buried at the Saratoga cemetery Monday. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral.

Maria Elsebein Backhaus was born in Garnavillo Township on the 18th of September, 1852, and prepared in Sunday School and was confirmed in St Peter’s church in Ceres, Clayton Go., Iowa, in the year 1866, and from that time on made her home with her parents. At the age of 18 years, she was united in marriage to Henry Harnack; of Clayton County, where she made her home for 28 years and then moved to Worth County. Iowa, and resided there for two years. Her husband died there nine years ago and from there she came to Howard County where she made her home until the time of her death, with her youngest son, Arthur. She passed away Saturday morning, April 5, 1913, after three months’ illness.
She was the mother of six children, one daughter who passed away eleven months ago, a son who died in infancy, and four sons who live to mourn her loss. She also leaves five grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers, and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. Matthias at the German Lutheran church, at Davis Corners, Monday, April 7th. Interment took place in the Saratoga Cemetery.
