Thomas E. Lewis, one of the old settlers of Howard county, passed away at his home in Cresco, Monday evening, at the advanced age of 87 years. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church, Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, burial at Oak Lawn.

Thomas Elliott Lewis was born in Delaware county, New York state on January 5th, 1826.
He left New York in 1847 and lived a few years in Grant county, Wis.
In 1852 he made the overland trip to California and returned in the year 1853 to his old New York state home, where on April 28 of that year he was united in marriage to Margaret Renwick. Had he lived until the 28th of this month they would have celebrated the 60th anniversary of their marriage.
They moved at once to Grant county, Wis., to his farm where they remained but one year when he moved to Howard county, Iowa, where they have made their home since 1854.
Three sons were born to this union, John of Winneshiek county, and James E. of Cresco and one son William who passed on before. There were two daughters born, Jennie who preceded her father into the world beyound{sp} and Mrs. Margaret Mitchell of Cresco. He leaves a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He died March 31, 1913, and funeral servicces{sp} were at Congregational church April 2, 1913, D. T. Robertson officiating.
