OBITUARY.
TAFT.
Elizabeth Martin was born July 1, 1840, in Syracuse, N. Y., and died at her home in Cresco, Iowa, June 15, 1911. When but a child she moved with her parents to Hillsdale, Mich., where she grew to womanhood. On the fifth of May 1855, she was married to Mr. Alvin Taft, whose death occurred June 28, 1908. In 1856 she moved west with her husband and settled on a farm in Albion township, Howard county. Mr. and Mrs. Taft were among the earliest settlers in the county and endured great hardships in the first years of their residence here. They saw and had an important part in all of that wonderful development by which in fifty years a raw prairie was turned into a civilized and cultured community. Mr. and Mrs. Taft lived on their farm in Albion township until 1885 when they moved to Cresco, where they have since resided. Last December Mrs. Taft had an attack of the grip from which she never fully recovered. On the third of June she was taken seriously ill and failed rapidly until her death. She leaves two children, Henry A. Taft of Monticello, Minn., and Mrs. J. J. House of Cresco, who with their families feel deeply their great loss. Their sense of grief is shared by the whole community, for Mrs. Taft was aniversally beloved. Her cheerful disposition and sunny temper made her a delightful companion for young and old and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. J Hinman in the Congregational church Saturday afternoon and the body was interred at Oaklawn.
