Death of Charles Hess.
Charles Hess passed away at an early hour Friday morning as the re¬ult of a fall on Wednesday afternoon from an apple tree while engaged in picking apples. His injuries were interna1, caused by falling upon a low picket fence.
Carl{?} Gottleib Hess was born Sept. 13, 1845, at Bern, Switzerland, the oldest of a family of seven. In 1856, he, with his parents, immigrated to Ohio. In 1865 he came to Howard County, and has since resided in this and Winneshiek Counties, moving to Cresco four years ago. In 1871 he was married to Christina Jungk, and to them were born seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Wm. C., of Ghent, Minn., Frank E., of N. Prairie, Wis., and Mrs. John McIntosh, Mrs. W. C. Blackburn, and Miss Esther, all of Cresco.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the home, conducted by Rev. Bless, with interment in New Oregon Cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: I am not sure if the name Carl was an error but his gravestone shows Charles Hess.
