OBITUARY.
WOODWARD.
Brother James Woodward was born in Howard county, Iowa, Nov. 22, 1855. Here he spent the greater part of his life. Sept. 19, 1877, he was married to Emma Wilson and three children were born to this union, two daughters and a son, all of whom have passed away. Feb. 11, 1883, he was married to Addie Moore and to this union were born two children, one son and one daughter.
In the spring of 1899, he with his family moved to Dell Rapids, S. D.. where they resided till the spring of 1904 when they moved to Dickey county, N. D., where he lived till the 16th day of March when he passed peacefully to his rest. For the past two years he has been an invalid of cancer. The most able physicians’ were summoned to his help, but all medical skill failed to give relief. Other means were sought for the restoration of health; they also failed. During the last six months the suffering has been intense. He alone knew what he was bearing, for words failed to describe it. Three weeks ago the heart began to beat more slowly, so we knew the end was near. He endured his affliction bravely and patiently, hoping for the best. Everything loving hands could do was done, to make the last days more pleasant. A few hours before he passed away, he gave this pleasing testimony.
“I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, 1 have finished my course. Hence forth there there{sic} is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge will give to me at that day.”
He united with the Baptist church of Cresco in 1879, and has been a loyal member of the same ever since. He has since his union with said body been a foremost worker, holding many important offices. Fragrant memories dwell in the minds of many to whom he imparted the words of truth.
He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, Woodmen, Rebekas and Royal Neighbors. In all these Lodges he was a well respected member, of excellent standing. As a citizen he was looked upon as one of moral integrity, and interested in the welfare of the community in which he resided. He has held important offices in connection with city life at Ellendale, N. D., which he proved himself well qualified to hold. He loved all whom he knew intimately, and was loved by them.
The many friends gathered upon this occasion, the beautiful flowers resting on the casket indicate the warm place he holds in esteem of those who knew him.
He was a loving husband, an affectionate father, and always deeply interested in the welfare of his home.
He leaves to mourn his loss a father, Wm. Woodward, his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Babcock, a brother, Mr. E. Woodward, two sisters, Mrs. G. Buchanan and Mrs. B. Holton, also five grandchildren and many distant relatives. To these loved ones we extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy, and trust the anticipation of reunion shall help them to bear their loss bravely and well.
The Odd Fellows had charge of his funeral, the service being held in the Baptist church, and burial was in New Oregon cemetery.
