MASON CITY - Lloyd Winfield Peter was born on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1967 to Lloyd and Marian (Sanborn) Peter in Cresco. He departed this earthly life on Jan. 9, 2020 in his Mason City home.
Win was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. He was raised in Lime Springs and graduated high school from Crestwood High School (Cresco) in 1985. Win enjoyed playing football and wrestling at Crestwood, receiving many honors and awards. After high school he briefly attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
While at Crestwood, Win was lucky enough to find the love of his life, Lisa Marie McCarville. Win and Lisa dated through high school and attended Upper Iowa University together before moving to Mason City. Win and Lisa were united in marriage on a snowy day, May 6, 1989, in Lourdes, Iowa at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Once married, Win and Lisa bought a home in Nora Springs, Iowa. Here to this union one very special son was born, Jacob Winfield Peter. Win and his family moved to Mason City in 2003. Mason City provided new opportunities for the Peter family including jobs, academic activities, and a vibrant community.
In Win’s spare time, he was found grilling, doing yard work, coaching his son in youth baseball (little league and Mason City Pros), training his hunting dog Sadee, or spending time with the Peter or McCarville family. Summer activities were full of joy and laughter.
What Win loved the most was traveling around and supporting Jacob’s baseball passion during his son’s youth, high school and collegiate careers. You could often find Win on a hot summer day in the back yard working with Jacob pitching, hitting, or fielding countless ground balls. It’s what they loved. In the last few years, when Win couldn’t be at the field supporting his son, he was glued to the TV watching him play all over the country. Win also loved hunting and fishing with his father and son, and going to many Twins, Vikings and Hawkeye games with his friends or family. Family, friends, and sports always went hand-in-hand with Win.
Win was a loyal and hard worker. He worked a variety of jobs, primarily in the trucking, transport and delivery industry. He worked his first job as a Pizza Hut delivery driver in Mason City, eventually working his way up to assistant manager. He loved the job benefits (getting free pizzas)! He later worked for Zanios Foods as a delivery driver, before moving on to work for Neil Mahr Trucking for 10 years out of Lime Springs, delivering feed to local farmers and livestock lots. In July 2009, Win started work hauling beans and corn for Rock Falls Grain in Rock Falls, Iowa. He loved this type of work, and especially the people he worked with. He was often found after work with his Rock Falls Grain co-workers conducting regular “safety meetings,” while some form of protein was smoking on the grill.
Win is survived by his wife Lisa (McCarville) Peter, and son Jacob (fiancé Carlie Cook) of Phoenix, Ariz. Also surviving him are his mother, Marian Peter of Cresco (resident at the Patty Elwood Center), and four sisters and their families: Rebecca (Dan) Pahl of Lime Springs, Elizabeth (Danny Reese) Peter of Fort Wayne, IN, Margaret (Steve) Hunt of Peyton, Colo., and Barbara (Robert) Reicks of Cresco. He leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and nephews and many cousins on the Peter side. Win also is survived by three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews on the McCarville side.
Win is preceded in death by his loving father, Lloyd E. Peter and his father-in-law, Robert J. McCarville. We are at peace knowing he is with his dad and Bob hunting, fishing, watching endless baseball games, or sitting around a campfire with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, great smile, and spitting out unfiltered, movie-quotin’, one-liners.
A private family ceremony will be held Friday, (Jan. 17, 2020) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, where a public visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Inurnment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lime Springs, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mohawk Baseball Team.
