John Martin was born at Whetstone, Leicestershire, England, March 24, 1838, and died at Cresco, Iowa, March 10, 1910.
In 1850 the Martin family moved to Canada and settled at Waterloo where Mr. Martin learned the blacksmith trade and in a large measure supported his widowed mother and younger brothers and sisters. February 12, 1864, be was married to Malinda Condy who survives him. In 1868 he settled at Ridgeway, Iowa, and in 1899 moved to Cresco where he has resided continuously since.
Mr. Martin united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1860, and was actively engaged in the work of this church as class leader, Sunday School Superintendent, steward and trustee until compelled by his illness, which dates back five years, to give over to others the work in which he was ever happy and which could demand no sacrifice too great of him.
Left to mourn his departure, aside from Mrs. Martin, are five sons, Wellington C. of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Frank D. and Edward R. of South Dakota, John A. and Frederick L. of North Dakota; three daughters, Mrs. Emma Hoyt of Ridgeway, Iowa, Mrs. Lottie Whitney of Churdan, Iowa, and Miss Susan of Cresco, and a number of grandchildren including Virtus Martin of Cresco.
The funeral will be held from the home at 2:30 on Saturday, and interment will be in the family lot in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
