Diphtheria developed last Thursday morning in the home of Charles Derr of Paris Twp., his little son being the victim. The attending physician notified the secretary of the township board of health before he left the premises at 11 o’clock a. m. and the secretary served a written notice on the township clerk [he not having a phone.] The doctor also notified the clerk in writing the same day. As the 1atter had to go via Elgin and out on the rural route, the quarantine was not put up until Friday evening and the boy had died Friday morning. The remains were buried Friday afternoon by the boy’s grandfather, John Derr, who was assisted at the grave by his brother Mike Derr, and the burial was done according to orders and instructions from the undertaker as provided in such cases. On account of burying the boy, both the John and Mike Derr homes were quarantined as was also the home of B. A. Ferrie who was not near the house or helped with the burial but with whom Chas. Derr rode to Schley before his home was quarantined. Later, the quarantine was removed from those three homes as it was held unlawful and unnecessary by the board of health physician. We publish these facts by request as the release of these families from quarantine has been criticised.

In Memory of Bert Johnny Derr.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Derr mourn the loss of their son Bert Johnny who died Jan. 28, 1910, aged 4 years 5 months and 11 days. His death was quite sudden as he had been sick scarcely a week, and although the attending physician pronounced his case diphtheria it was hard for his parents to realize that the end was so near. How tenderly did they care for the little sufferer during the few days of his sickness, but all that willing hands and loving hearts could do was of no avail, and in the silence of the early morn they seemed to hear the gentle voice of the Savior, “Suffer little children to come unto Me for such is the Kingdom of Heaven," and that precious little life, the very sunshine of their home, was brought to a close. Bert was a cheerful, happy child and will be sadly missed not only among parents and relatives but also by a host of friends among whom he was a general favorite. He was laid to rest by the side of his little brother in the New Oregon Cemetery. The grief stricken parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow.
