How Al Miller Met His Death.
The Minneapolis Journal gives the following account of the fire in which Albert Miller was suffocated Monday morning:
“Albert Miller, was suffocated by smoke in a fire in the loft of the Bardin livery barn, 807-811 Sixth street south, at an early hour yesterday. He died while being taken to the city hospital in the police ambulance.
Miller was a hostler and was asleep in the loft when the fire started. Clifford Ryan was on watch in the office.
Ryan was awakened about 4 a. m. by Miller’s cries, “Help, help! I’m chooking{sp}!” the man shouted.
The watchman shouted to Miller to kick open a side window and jump. He was on the second floor. The answer was, “For God’s sake, save me!” shouted a choking voice. But for his timidity he would have been saved, as the distance to the ground was not great.
When the firemen reached the scene they sent ladders to the second story window, which they smashed in, Miller was found lying on the floor near the window as if he had groped his way there during his last moments of consciousness. He was picked up and carried down. Life was not extinct, but he died without regaining consciousness. He was not burned.”
The remains were brought to Cresco Tuesday evening, and the funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home of his mother, Mrs. Fred Miller, Rev. Gammons officiating. The interment was in Oak Lawn cemetery.
