Rev. Michael Aloysius McCartey was born in Boston, Dec. 30, 1844, and three years later the family came west and located in Peoria, Ill. He entered college at the age of seventeen and studied at Girardo, the Barrons, and Milwaukee. Received his first holy communion at St. Mary’s church, Peoria, on a Christmas morning, and later was confirmed in the same church. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 17, 1870, at St. Frances seminary, Milwaukee, and said his first mass in the Peoria church.
We are informed by Robt. Phelan that Father McCartey’s first mass in Cresco, and at which he was present, was celebrated in the old school house. Services for a time were held in the upper story of the Jackson building and later in a vacant building near the location of Fred Woellstein’s store. The first church, the one now used but which has been enlarged and remodeled was built by Father McCartey on a fonudation{SP} laid by Father Hardin from stone taken from a chapel which at one time was located between Vernon Springs and New Oregon.
Father McCartey was a strong advocate of temperance and the Father Mathew society was the organization that was nearest his heart. His annual sermon when he urged his people to take the total abstinence pledge was the means of turning many victims of strong drink from the dangerous road which they were traveling.
The Father Matthew Society, also the C. O. F., attended the funeral in a body.
Rev. McCartey’s only surviving relative is a sister, now in very feeble health, who has always resided with him.
