OBITUARY.
MEAD.
Mrs. W. R. Mead passed away very unexpectedly last Saturday forenoon as the result of a paralytic attack about 7 o’clock in the morning. She retained consciousness for a short time only and passed away shortly before eleven o’clock. She had been in her usual health all winter but upon wakening complained of not feeling very well, but dressed herself rather more quick than usual and went down stairs, and while seated in a chair awaiting the preparation of breakfast was stricken.
Chloe Ballard Jones was born in Jamestown, N. Y., October 2, 1829, the daughter of Samuel and Rhoda Ballard. Her mother dying about two years after the birth of the daughter, she was adopted by an aunt whose name she took. She was the youngest of a family of four, two boys and two girls. One brother always resided in Pennsylvania, and the other brother, Wm. Ballard, and the sister, Mrs. Jane Harris, made their home in Cresco for many years. All of them have preceded her in death.
At Busti, N. Y., the deceased was united in marriage to William Robbins Mead who passed away Jan. 22, 1905, after a married life of exactly 59 years. In 1853, she accompanied her husband to the West, stopping at Beloit, Wis., one year, when they moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and later, in 1857, came to New Oregon, where they remained until coming to Cresco with the advent of the railroad in 1866.
The deceased was the mother of two daughters, Mrs. Ella Mead Dissmore, of Kamiah, Idaho, and Miss Lauraine, who has remained at home with her parents, the support of their declining years.
In the early 70’s Mrs. Mead united with Grace Episcopal Church and has since remained a faithful and consistent member.
Her death occurred the morning of Saturday, the 27th of March, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 25 days.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon from Grace Episcopal Church, Rev. McVettie of Decorah officiating, assisted by Mr. Blaker of Faribault, Minn. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, mute reminders of the esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was in Oak Lawn.
