Madison Taft Dies Suddenly.
Madison Taft sustained a stroke of apoplexy on Thursday morning, resulting in his death Saturday morning. The deceased has been in feeble health for some time but of late has been feeling rather stronger and was about town up to the morning he was stricken, the attack occurring just after he had eaten breakfast. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the M. E. church.

Madison Taft was born in Oswego county. New York. June 25, 1831. At the age of six he moved with his parrents{sic} to Sandusky county, Ohio. When he was fourteen years of age they moved westward again and settled in Hilsdale countv, Michigan. About 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Angeline Carpenter. In the year 1855 they moved to Rock county, Wisconsin, where they lived for two years and then came to Howard county, Iowa, arriving here the 19th of March 1857.
When the war cloud darkened the national horizon and Abraham Lincoln issued his call for troops, Mr. Taft enlisted in the cause of his country and served faithfully until the end of the conflict. He aided in the capture of Vicksburg, Brownsville, Mobile and many other places.
Mr. Taft was a true man. modest and unassuming in manner, kind to all. He was a Christian gentleman. His Christian career began early in life, having been baptized by the Chaplain of the 24th Indiana Infantry at Pensacola, Florida. He was a faithful member of the M. E. church and for many years a member of the official board.
Thre{e} children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Taft, two of whom are living, Mrs. L. P. Mason and Edgar Taft, both of Cresco. Mrs. Taft preceeded her husband to the spirit world by about three months. He was stricken suddenly and died December 12, 1908.
The funeral took place on Monday afternoon at the M. E. church, Rev. Gammons officiating, assisted by Rev. Hinman. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery.
