Obituary.
TAFT.
Angeline Carpenter was born in Orwall, N. Y., November 25, 1823. She was married to Madison Taft, Dec. 25, 1852, at Jonesville, Mich. In 1855 she moved with her husband to Janesvile, Wisconsin, and two years after, March 9, 1857, came with him to make a home in Albion township. She soon united with the Methodist church of New Oregon and has been a consistent and faithful member of that denomination for nearly fifty years. In recent years she has made her home in Cresco. For a long time, Mrs. Taft was afflicted with asthma, but her condition was not considered serious until a few days ago. She passed away at ten o’clock Friday night, Aug. 28, 1908, and her sudden death was a great shock to her friends and the whole community. Mrs. Taft leaves to mourn her loss, of her own immediate family, her husband and two children, Mr. Edgar Taft of Albion township and Mrs. Mary Ellen Mason of this city, and also three grandchildren and one great-grand child. A third child died in infancy. She was a member of a family that was very prominent in the early history of Howard county. Her only brother, who was employed in the postal service was frozen to death in one of the severe winters of that early time; a sister, Mrs. Maria Nichols died during the civil war, another sister, Mrs. Darrow, has recently passed away and three other sisters, Mrs. Sarah Patterson, Mrs. M. J. Nichols and Mrs. J. B. Mitchell survive to mourn her departure. She was a member of the W. R. C. and had a wide circle of friends in the city. The sympathy of the whole community goes to her husband in his deep affliction.
The funeral was held in the M. E. church Sunday afternoon a 2 o’clock and she was buried in New Oregon. Owing to the absence of Mr. Gammons, Mr. Hinman conducted the services.
