John Garrison Seger Doan, son of Matthew M. and Magdalene Seger Doan, was born December 12, 1831, in Ontario, Canada, near Niagara Falls.
When four years of age he moved with his parents to Berrien County, Michigan, and twelve years later to Wisconsin. While yet a young man he came to Iowa and, after returning for a time to Canada, finally settled in this state at Elgin, Fayette County It was here that he married Mary Alice Blakesley, the wife who survived him, on August 5, 1860.In 1868 the family moved to Cresco, where, with only temporary interruptions, the parents have since resided. The children are Walter E., Harriet Magdalene (Mrs. L. G. Weld), and the twin brothers, Frank L. and Fred M., all of whom survive. Three sisters are still living: Mary Ann (Mrs. Henry Hewson), of Kansas, Sarah Catherine (widow of Adam Fussell) formerly resident in New Oregon; and Malvina Marian (Mrs. Levi Earle), of Michigan.
After a long illness he departed this life on April 2, 1908, while at the home of his son Walter E. Doan, in Hopkinton, Iowa. All of his family were with him at the time of his death; Frank being also a resident of Hopkinton, and his daughter coming from her home at Iowa City and Fred from Riverside, California.
The funeral took place at the family residence in Cresco yesterday afternoon in charge of the I. O. O. F., Rev. Hinman of the Congregational church officiating. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
