JOHNSON.
Betsy Maria Johnson was born Oct. 29. 1872, in Winneshiek county, Iowa. At the age of one year she came to Cresco with her parents, Anderw{sic} Johnson and wife Sarah. Here she grew to womanhood and was brought up in the Christian faith and in fellowship with Christ, as she had been brought into communion with him by holy baptism. She was a member of the Norwegian Lutheran church of this place and for many years served as organist and was actively interest in those things that characterize a good church member and a Christian.
In 1891-92 she attended Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., and in 1896-97 Lutheran Ladies’ Seminary, Red Wing. She was one who always made use of her opportunities for advancement along educational lines and was also actively interested in music, in which art she became very proficient. In these things she will be greatly missed by a large number associated with her from time to time. For some years she assisted her father as bookkeeper and otherwise until she was forced to take charge of the business together with her sister at the father’s death. Always unassuming she was still able through diligence and practical ability to become influential in wider circles. Until she was taken sick about a year ago she was instructor in a business college in St. Paul and it is possible that her frail condition suffered unduly from the strain brought upon her by her work and cares of different kinds.
She entered a sanitarium just a year ago, but was brought home in an enfeebled condition last October, since which time she lingered until last Monday afternoon when death released her from her sufferings.
She was a model young woman who gave very little cause for criticism. Without judging hearts it is but fair to say that we have reason to feel that the world has been benefited by the life of such as she. May her memory be a source of comfort to the bereaved ones and a blessing to those who have had her as an example of a Christian young lady.
Funeral services were conducted by her former pastor, Rev. O. Ottersen of Lake Mills, Ia., who spoke in Norwegian at the house and in English, in the church. Prof. E. Hove, who also had been her pastor some years ago, and who was a personal friend of the family, made an address at the church. She was buried in Oaklawn by the side of her father March 26, 1908.

Transcriber’s Note: Her name is shows two different ways; however, her gravestone shows Bessie.
