Died at the residence of his brother, near Cresco, Saturday, Aug. 26, 1876, Elias Powers, aged 53 years. Remains taken to Louisville, New York, for interment.
Elias Powers was born Nov. 10, 1823, in Louisville, St. Lawrence county, N. Y. His father, Wm. Powers, being one of the early settlers of that county, Elias in early life became acquainted with the toils and privations of the pioneer. During his minority he was chiefly occupied in lumbering. Upon reaching his majority he assisted in the construction of bridges on the Ogdensburg & L. C. Railroad. In 1850, he with a brother sought the gold fields of California. Being quite successful in procuring the precious metel, they remained until 1852, when they returned to New York and erected a steam saw mill on the St. Lawrence. In 1853 he was married to Maria M. Miller, daughter of Rev. Levi Miller, of Louisville. In 1856 their mill was destroyed by fire, leaving the company somewhat embarrassed, there being no insurence upon the property. Mr Powers then turned his attention to farming in which vocation he continued until the death of his wife in 1866. He then disposed of his property in New York, and settled in Cresco in 1867. Since settling here he has been engaged in farming and the wheellwright business. On the first of Jan. 1876, he, with H. L. Powers, engaged in the hardware trade, but owing to his rapid decline in health, they were obliged to close out their business the latter part of July.
Mr. Powers united with the M. E. church in Louisville in 1864 and lived in its privileges until his death.
