Gerald J. Rose, 88, of Cresco, IA, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., with Father Dennis Cain officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home Cresco, and will continue at the church an hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Gerald Rose was born in Elgin, IL on August 28, 1930, the son of Thomas and Rose (Ballak) Rose. He graduated from Rudolphinum High School with the class of 1950. After graduation from high school, Gerald worked road construction and then enlisted with the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1954.
On April 20, 1954, he was united in marriage to Arletta Grimm at St. Joseph’s Church in Cresco, IA. Gerald worked first at Burgess and Sons Lumber Yard, then Spahn and Rose Lumber Company for over 46 ˝ years. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post #135 and lifetime member of the Notre Dame Parish. Gerald appreciated the simple things in life – gardening, hunting, and fishing. His favorite hobby was working with wood. He built picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, shelves and family gifts. Gerald enjoyed spending time with family and sharing some Czech language.
Gerald is survived by two sons Jim (Tammy) Rose of Centerville, IA, Joe (Lynn) Rose of Cresco, IA, one daughter Sharon (T-J) Shields of Lakeville, MN, daughter-in-law Pam Rose of Springville, IA, 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren , many nieces and nephews and one brother Charles T. Rose of San Diego, CA.
He was preceded in death by his mom Rose Rose, his loving wife of 64 years of marriage Arletta in 2018, and one son Stephen Rose.
On behalf of Gerald, his family wishes to say a special thank you to the staff at Howard County Community Hospice for their wonderful services and care to dad for these past months. Also, a special thank you to the volunteers for Meals-on-Wheels.
