Mrs. Peter Morton Dead.
After months of suffering and confinement to the house, Mrs. Peter Morton died October 2, 1907, shortly before eight o’clock, at the home of R. A. Engbretson. For several years Mrs. Morton was afflicted with Bright’s disease and this aggravated by a fall on Feb. 28th last when she sustained a fracture of the hip and collar bones. Since that time she has been a constant sufferer. Several times during the past week it seemed as though life had passed from her body but with a wonderful vitality the heart action revived and sustained her. When death came it was as a blessed relief. Mrs. Morton’s maiden name was Harriet M. Cooley. She was born Oct 15, 1835, in Franklinville, N. Y., where she was married Jan. 1, 1862, to Peter Morton. They came to Iowa in the spring of that year, buying the farm now owned by their son Claude. Here they continued to reside until about thirteen years ago; since then their home has been principally in Decorah. Four children were born to them—Wm., Claude, Lottie (Mrs. R. A. Engbertson) and Charles, the latter dying in infancy. In early life Mrs. Morton became a member of the Methodist church, an affiliation she retained faithfully to her death. Though quiet and unassuming the deceased was honored with the esteem of many friends and in her home relations she was a true wife and mother.
The funeral was held at the house Friday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. W. E. VanBuren officiating. Interment at Cresco.—Decorah Republican.
