Ashton Hall died on Tuesday at the Independence Hospital and the remains arrived in Cresco yesterday in charge of Mrs. Hall and his son Frank who went down to Independence on receipt of the telegram announcing his death. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence. The interment will be in New Oregon Cemetery.

HALL.
James Ashton Hall was born Oct. 1, 1844, in Rutland Co., Vermont, and died at Independence, Iowa, April 23, 1907, aged 62 years, 6 months and 22 days.
At the age of five years he, with his parents, moved to White Oak Springs, Wis. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in defense of his country’s flag and fought for the integrity of the Union. He served three years and was honorably discharged at the end of his term of enlistment.
May 1, 1866, he was married to Nancy J. Fessenden, and to them two children were born, Frank and Harry. She died July 28, 1901. He married Persia E. DeNoyelles on Oct. 1, 1903, and is survived by his wife, two sons, five grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters.
The deceased was one of the prominent and respected citizens of this county, and at one time was honored by his fellow citizens with an election to the office of sheriff for two terms, a position he held to the satisfaction of all and with credit to himself. Since then he has filled other offices of trust and responsibility.
The funeral was held at the residence last Friday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Hill, of the Baptist church. Interment was in New Oregon Cemetery.
