OBITUARY
WHITNEY:
Miriam Emma Whitney was born in Wilmot, New Hampshire, April 26, 1853, the daughter of William S. and Mary B. Whitney, and passed away at the home of her uncle, N S. Durgin, in Cresco, Iowa on Saturday, January 19, 1907.
Miss Whitney received a common school education in East Andover and later attended the Bryant & Stratton Commercial College at Manchester, N. H. She studied music in the Musical Conservatory at Concord, N. H., under Prof. Merrill, a leading musical instructor of much ability. After finishing her musical education she returned to Manchester, where she obtained a situation in the dressing rooms of the Manchester Cotton Mills, which situation she held for a number of years, when she was promoted to a clerical position,. After being in the employ of these mills for twenty-seven years, she resigned.
In 1897, she came to Cresco, Iowa. When the Northern Iowa Telephone Co., commenced business, she was engaged by them as their first operator, which position she held for a number of years, when she was engaged as their bookkeeper.
She was a member in good standing of Mistletoe Rebekah Lodge No. 57, of West Manchester, New Hampshire, also an active member of Memorial W. R. C. No. 164, of Cresco, Iowa.
Miss Whitney was converted and joined the Congregational church in her early childhood, since which time she has ever been a devout Christian. Since coming to Cresco, she united with the M. E. church. Her splendid talents were always devoted to the service of God. Since coming to Cresco, she has served very satisfactorily in the several church auxiliaries. Her long and able service as leading soprano in the church choir was highly appreciated and enjoyed by all those who heard her sing. No church or other good organization that requested her service was ever turned away while she was able to respond to the call.
Her work as secretary of the District Epworth League has been excelled by none. Her unselfishness in responding to the numerous calls on her to help, where singing was required, was at once beautiful and convincing that she was always actuated by a true Christian spirit, in devoting what she considered her God given talent to the benefit of her fellow beings.
The funeral was held at the M. E. church, yesterday afternoon, Rev; Gammons officiating. The W. R. C., of which deceased was a member, attended in a body and participated in the services. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
