W. H. Hughes Dead.
Yesterday, we received a letter from John R. Hughes, at Garfield, Wash., announcing the death of his brother W. H., at Spokane, Wash., April 19th, and enclosing press clipping giving the details of his death, which follows:
“As the result of a blow received while trying to break up a gang of criminals in Oklahoma a year ago, W. H. Hughes, formerly city attorney at Clinton, Okla., died yesterday at the Deaconess home from a tumor of the brain. Mr. Hughes had been ill ever since his injury.
“’My brother was city attorney of Clinton, Okla.,’ said J. R. Hughes, of Garfield, Wash., last night. ‘He was engaged in exterminating a gang of criminals, gamblers and roisterers. As a result of his activity, he incurred the enmity of the gang.
“’One of the gang, a big, strapping fellow, hit my brother with his fist on the back of the head. It was this injury that resulted in his death to-day. ‘
“The deceased was 35 years old, and his home was In Iowa. He came to Spokane with his mother three weeks ago. He was a member of the Odd Fellows. Besides his mother and brother, he leaves a sister, who resides at Granite, Idaho.
“’Mr. Hughes’ death was caused by a tumor at the base of the brain,’ said Dr. J. H. Sutherland last night. ‘As a last desperate chance to save him, he was operated upon and the tumor removed. He died two hours after.
“’We will hold an autopsy to-day. It is very probable that the tumor was the result of the blow he received a year ago.’
“The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the chapel of the New England Undertaking Com-pany.”
The deceased was for a long time a resident of Howard County, learning the printer’s trade in the Republican office and afterwards reading law with M. J. Carter and graduating from the State University of Iowa. He practiced for some time at Garner, Ia., before going to Oklahoma.
