OBITUARY.
BEACH
Mary J. Howard was born September 3, 1834, in Cambridge, England, and came to America with her parents when she was about eight years old. She was married to R. Preston Beach October 4, 1854, at Joliet, Ill.
Eight children were born to this union, six of whom with the husband survive—John H., Fred W., Lizzie Mitchell, Eugene W., Henry E. and Edith Barth. A daughter, Mary, died in 1871 and a son, Edgar, in 1896.
Mr. and Mrs. Beach were among the early settlers of Howard county, settling on a farm in New Oregon township in June, 1856. Here she lived until the spring of 1899, when the old homestead was sold and the family moved to Cresco where she died January 4, 1906.
Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. Gammons of the M. E. church, of which deceased was a member since childhood.
Mrs. Beach endured a long and painful illness, but through it all she maintained the same cheerful, patient disposition which during her lifetime had made her the idol of her family and beloved by friends and neighbors. Her greatest pleasure consisted in doing the things which made for the comfort and happiness of those about her, and the constant care bestowed upon her during her last illness was evidence that relatives and friends had caught the spirit of service which was so prominent a trait of her character. They had learned from her that the highest duty in this life was serving others.
Burial was in the family lot in New Oregon cemetery.
